From empty land to a thriving off-grid nursery — how we designed and built a completely solar-powered greenhouse in rural Montana.
When we first broke ground on our property in Montana, the idea of running a fully solar-powered greenhouse felt like a dream. Now, watching our bonsai trees soak up the same sun that powers every light, pump, and heater in our operation, it feels like the most natural thing in the world.
The journey wasn't without its challenges. Montana winters are brutal — we're talking -30°F nights and weeks without significant sunlight. Our solar system had to be designed not just for summer abundance, but for the depths of January. We worked with a local renewable energy contractor to design a battery bank large enough to carry us through 5-7 cloudy days without any grid backup.
The result is a 4,800 sq ft greenhouse that runs entirely on 24 solar panels and a 48V battery bank. We heat with a combination of passive solar design, thermal mass (water-filled barrels painted black), and a wood pellet backup heater for the coldest nights. Water comes from a rainwater collection system and a shallow well with a solar pump.
The plants don't know they're off-grid. They just grow.
